What We've Been Doing - Spring Term

Friday 15th March

This week we have been learning about Tim Peake. Tim Peake is an astronaut with the European Space Agency. He was the first British astronaut with the agency, and was the 7th British born person to go into space.

In art we have been looking at the oil painting "The Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh. We looked at how he used a vibrant pallette to create the swirling motion and then we created our own "Starry Night" pictures. We also discovered many interesting facts about the dutch painter's tragically short life.

In PE we have been developing our hand eye co-ordination and balance using tennis rackets and balls.

We are monitoring our science experiment and recording the results. Please see the photos below (Friday 1st March).

Week Commencing Monday 4th March / World Book Day Thursday 7th March

As part of our multi-cultural World Book Week we are reading the story Ada's violin which is based in Cateura, Paraguay. We started our week with an exciting hook into our learning, using clues to find out what our story was about. In English we have been learning about the meaning of some new vocabulary and finding out more about the 'slums' of Cateura. We will be using all our gathered information to write a description of the 'slums' that Ada lives in. We will be making instruments out of recycled materials, just like they did in the story. We will also be learning more about the importance of recycling.

We really enjoyed making our own instruments from recycled materials. We then evaluated our designs and thought about what we had done well and how we could improve our instruments.

We are carrying out a science investigation to find out how light and dark affect the growth of a plant and a seed.

Keep looking to see our results!

Space

We are really excited to start our Space Invaders topic. On Monday we were shocked to find a spacecraft that had crashed in our side field. We explored all the clues and decoded a letter to find out more. An alien called Beegu had landed on our field and is now lost. I wonder if we can help him? We will be looking at the story of Beegu in English during this topic.

In gymnastics we have learnt how to use the large climbing apparatus safely. We explored moving on/through it in different ways and challenged ourselves to try a balance.

Thursday 14th February

In English we spent this week learning and reciting a poem. We added actions and sound to our poem and then performed it to the other Year 2 class.

Friday 8th February

This week in maths we have been learning all about time. In Y1 the children learnt about o'clock and half past so after a quick recap, they have been focusing on quarter past and quarter to the hour. The children have identified times printed on clock faces, drawn hands on to a clock face to show the specified time and solved time word problems. We are so proud that the children are confidently using the correct vocabulary (minute hand, hour hand, clockwise and anti-clockwise) when making and reading times on clock faces and can explain how they know it is correct.

As part of our topic work we imagined that we were Captain Scott writing his final letter to Sir Francis Bridgeman, his former commanding officer in the Royal Navy.

Safer Internet Day

Today we discussed with the children how to keep safe when using their gaming devices, iPhones, laptops and computers. They watched a short film looking at consent online - when do young children need to ask permission and what personal information, photos, and videos they should share online.

Please click on the link below to view this film with your child.

NSPCC Numbers Day

Oak class visited each of the four KS1 classrooms today. In each classroom they found a different maths challenge - one involved very hungry crocodiles that liked eating odd numbers! The children had great fun problem solving using logic and their mathematical knowledge. What a super way for the children to use and develop, reinforce, and consolidate their mathematical understandings!

Here are some photos of our exciting numbers day.

Friday 25th January

In gymnastics we have been learning to use the large equipment safely. We have learnt how to travel, balance, jump (stretch, tuck, and star) and roll (log, side, and tuck roll). On Thursdays in PE, with Mr Steggles, the children have enjoyed learning how to keep control of a ball using their hockey stick.

Friday 18th January

What a very busy week we have had! The children have been doing lots of quizzes during our assessment week to see how they are progressing in Maths, Reading, Writing, Spelling and Grammar & Punctuation.

Year 2 have been working on an exciting topic around a book by Tanya Robyn Batt called The Princess and the White Bear King. It is a re-telling of a traditional tale from Northern Europe and the children have enjoyed spotting familiar stories within it like Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast. They have loved the anticipation created by only reading a small section at a time and predicting what might happen next. They were satisfied with the ending when they finally reached it but sad that the story was over. The pupils have written diary entries, drawn story maps and even created their own class chapter books by taking a section each to retell. Year 2s have been looking at maps of Northern Europe in more detail and learning about the Scandinavian countries. As part of this exciting topic Year 2 have learnt about the continents and oceans of the world. We have been delighted to see so many pupils engaged in their learning and bringing into school extra homework around this topic.

Friday 11th January

Welcome back we hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year. This week during circle times the children have told the class about a favourite place they had visited, their favourite present or told us about a special person they had seen over the holiday. What a fun Christmas everyone seems to have had!

Our exciting new topic this term is Frozen Planet - in literacy the children will be looking at a book by Tanya Robyn Batt called The Princess and the White Bear King. It is a re-telling of a traditional tale from Northern Europe. As part of our topic work the children will be learning all about the Scandinavian countries in more detail and finding out about famous explorers who have conquered the polar regions.
